A Health Information Exchange (HIE) is a network infrastructure that enables the secure electronic sharing of patient health information across different healthcare organizations. HIEs facilitate the exchange of clinical data including care summaries (C-CDA documents), lab results, immunizations, and ADT (Admit/Discharge/Transfer) notifications. Major national HIE networks include CommonWell, Carequality, and eHealth Exchange. Regional and state-based HIEs also exist. Health Cloud integrates with HIEs to enrich Patient 360 views with community health data.
